Equipment and Technical Information

To capture maximum detail, tonal range, and color gamut for printing his fine-art images, Robert uses a 32MP PhaseOne P30+ digital back on his Contax 645 camera system. The resulting 200MB, 16-bit file ensures that fine details and smooth continuous tones are visible even in his largest prints.

Although Robert enjoyed working in a traditional darkroom, he prefers the precise control and repeatability that he can achieve using digital techniques.

Robert prints his images on premium lustre paper using the latest inkjet technology. His prints are archival rated for a lifespan of 100+ years.

To make sure that his photographs reflect the natural world as accurately as possible, he minimizes his use of filters, limiting his selection to neutral-density, polarizing, and warming filters.

Robert believes very strongly that it is his responsibility as a photographer to accurately portray the subject matter as he saw it; therefore, he does not digitally manipulate his images beyond what would be done in a traditional darkroom--adjusting only for contrast and color casts.
